robert.jpgGuitarist Robert MR has recorded several albums and performed in many festivals and events since 2010. Robert’s most recent release is “Indonesian Songbook”, collaboration between his group, Shadow Puppets, and the seasoned Indonesian singer, Harvey Malaihollo. Robert’s 2014 duo release with the venerable, genre-breaking pianist, Riza Arshad “Piano Duet Guitar”, was nominated as “Jazz Album of The Year” at Anugerah Musik Indonesia 2015. At around the same time, Robert recorded and released two jazz standard albums with the prolific jazz pianist, Nial Djuliarso together with the talented Kevin Yosua on the bass and Nial’s younger drummer brother, Othman. Robert’s first solo album, consisting 7 of his original compositions, “Gratitude” was released in 2012. One of the composition, “Grey’s Blues” was nominated as “Best Jazz Track” at Indonesian Cutting Edge Music Award (ICEMA) 2014. Robert has also co-wrote a composition for the well-known Indonesian ethno-jazz group, SimakDialog on their latest release, “The 6th Story”.

 

Robert has performed in Java Jazz Festival every year since 2011, as well as in many Jazz Festivals and clubs around Indonesia and South East Asia, including Ngayogjazz in Yogyakarta, Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore, Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC), Smiles Jazz Club in Bangkok, No Black Tie in Kuala Lumpur, and many others. As a session guitarist, Robert has worked with bands and orchestras such as Twilight Orchestra, Aminoto Kosin Orchestra, Widya Kristianti Orchestra, Dian HP, as well as for solo artists and groups such as Art of Tree, Dira Sugandi, and many others.

 

Besides maintaining a productive performing career, Robert is involved deeply in music education. Robert has been a part of Universitas Pelita Harapan Conservatory of Music team of lecturers since 2010, and has taught more than 200 students in subjects such as Music Theory, Instrumental Majors, Sight Reading, Form Analysis and Ensembles. Since 2014, Robert is involved in developing a jazz guitar curriculum for D’Jazz Music School, an upcoming, informal music school in Jakarta, and currently serves as the Head of Guitar Department. From 2011 to 2015, Robert held the position as Head of Performance Concentration at Institut Musik Indonesia, one of the leading music colleges in Indonesia. He was responsible in leading the design of their 4 year, D4 (sarjana terapan) curriculum for contemporary performance. He has also taught Theory, Ensemble, Instrumental Major, Sight Reading classes.

 

Robert graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Performance (cum laude) in 2008.
